Project Name: Simulate
Project Description: Taking everyday acts in life and simulating it to look melodramatic, odd, and bizarre. This would require me to do a performance and while I am doing a performance, I will be taking shots of myself in a sequence to create a world of reality and fantasy. One of my biggest sets back would be to make these photographs visually compelling. Because I am dealing with “every day routine acts in life,” I would need to amplify and improve the visual aspect of the image to bring the attention of the viewers. I will be using artificial lights and natural light, hopefully by blending the different lights together; it will bring a canny atmosphere.
Conceptual Concerns: The basic of my ideas is to put performance and photography together and build it into a sequence. Since it’s a simulation of the mundane acts in life, I am trying to incorporate weird and interesting images to twist the ideas of reality and the simulation.
Technical Skills Covered: Being able to manipulate the “everyday doing” into something unusual and in explainable. Color would be a technical skill that I would have a hard time with. Just dealing with the idea of the time I should shoot in the day, making sure the photographs doesn’t come out flat and uninteresting visually.
Formal Guidelines: Either doing 8x10 with 25 or more digital images or 16x20 with 20 or more digital images.
Artistic Reference: Erwin Wurm, Yoko Ono (Performer)
Readings: Taste and the aesthetics of simulation: art, technology, and the future (Timothy Jackson), Performance Art – Art History by Shelley Essak
Grades: I believe I would want to be graded through progression of my project. The more effort I put in as I progress in the class, the better my grade will be. I know in the real world effort won’t be enough but since I’m in school, I might as well place it as an importance over the success of my project. I truly believe it’s the process that matters than the end result.
Goals List: Find articles to read, not to put things back last minute, shoot more and to add on the conceptual idea.
